Slow Dancing in a Burning Room

It’s a cold December night, John looks to the stars above him while also trying to keep his eyes focused on the road.

“I love the stars, don’t you?” he hears. He quickly glances to the right to see his girlfriend, Julie, smiling at him somewhat awkwardly.

“Yeah…they’re so pretty,” he says, feigning enthusiasm.

A lot is on John’s mind at this point, he could care less about how many stars there are in the sky or how many fish there are in the sea, there’s only one thing on his mind: His relationship with Julie. John had met Julie three years ago in a guitar store, of all places. John had simply come in to buy a new acoustic after his old one had been stolen when he caught a glimpse of Julie for the first time, completely in awe of her beauty. Her long blonde hair coupled with her piercing blue eyes was too irresistible; he knew he couldn’t let her pass him by. He approached her, and the minute the two locked eyes, the song “Slow Dancing In a Burning Room” by John Mayer began playing over the speakers in the store. From that day on, the two were seemingly inseparable, and gradually fell for eachother more and more until they felt they were undeniably in love. John remembers Julie telling him the minute the two locked eyes for the first time, she fell for him immediately, and from then on “Slow Dancing In a Burning Room” was “their song”, so to speak. The song, being one of Julie’s favorites, had been brought up in numerous conversations between the two. Julie had always wondered what the actual meaning of the song was, while John secretly knew that the song was about a nasty breakup, but didn’t have the heart to tell her. He knew that the song had a much deeper meaning between the two of them, and that no matter what the love they shared would never end.

That was then, however, and now after several months of fighting and brief periods of estrangement between the two, John suddenly begins having second thoughts about their relationship. Although he might care about Julie more than anything in the entire world, he knows that deep down their relationship cannot be fixed in the state it’s in now. He feels like now, Julie doesn’t even recognize him anymore, and their relationship has become so bitter that he can’t keep apologizing his way out of his actions. He knows that no matter what he does, if they stay together any longer, their relationship is doomed, and he loves Julie too much to put her through any more pain, and deep down he feels like he doesn’t deserve a girl like Julie. John made up his mind prior to taking Julie to their favorite nightclub that this would be the last night the two of them would be together. He feels as though Julie can sense something’s up too, as she now seems a bit confused with John’s silence.

“Babe you all right? What’s on your mind?” she asks.

“It’s nothing babe, I promise, just know that I love you and always will,” John says, staring deep into her piercing blue eyes. Julie smiles as John finds a parking spot.

  “We’re here,” John says.

The two find a place to sit at the bar. Julie begins egging John on about how much she wants to dance, and John agrees but only after he’s had a few more drinks. Julie scoffs at John, calling him selfish. She storms off into the crowd on the dancefloor while John stays sitting, dismayed.

“What’s her problem? Calling me selfish…who does she think she is?” John says to himself.

There’s some commotion nearby between a couple of drunks, John simply dismisses their stupidity. Suddenly one of the drunks begins throwing punches, and soon an old fashioned bar room brawl occurs. John begins thinking that he should find Julie and leave, as something like this rarely happens in that particular club. As security tries to break up the fight, one of the drunks throws a bottle through the air, nailing one of the power outlets and shortcircuiting a nearby lamp causing a small fire. That small fire, combined with the amount of alcohol nearby, particularly on the floor, eventually causes the fire to grow and pretty soon the entire place is on fire. As everyone begins evacuating, John frantically searches for Julie. He eventually finds her knocked out on the dancefloor, having been nearly trampled to death by the sheer amount of people evacuating. John is able to revive her and the two make their way to the exit…only to find it covered in flames. They soon realize they’re the only ones left and there’s no way out as the nightclub has no windows and only one door out. Just before the two can start panicing, they suddenly freeze, as a familiar sound has found its way to their ears.

“It’s not a silly little moment, it’s not the storm before the calm…”

It was their song, the nearby jukebox was still working despite the fire. John, completely disregarding the situation they were in, guides Julie to the dancefloor.

“I believe I owe you a dance,” he says with a smile on his face. Julie, completely disregarding the situation as well, smiles back as John reaches his arm around Julie’s lower back while Julie reaches hers around John’s shoulder. They lock hands and lock eyes, their bodies begin swaying back and forth to the music. John soon begins thinking about the past few months, and although he knows he can’t truly make it up to her, he feels like he needs to say something.

“Babe…I’ve said some pretty bad things to you over the past few months and I-” he begins.

“No, John, don’t even say a word,” Julie interrupts, “I haven’t been the best to you either, and you had every right to get upset at me, it wasn’t your fault, and truth be told I don’t deserve someone as amazing as you. I’m sorry for everything I’ve said and done to you, and you’re anything BUT selfish.”

John couldn’t believe what he was hearing, and just like that all of his prior doubts of their relationship began fading away, as now given their situation, he realized there wasn’t a person on earth he’d rather be with than Julie.

“Jewels…I love you so much,” John says. He softly kisses her neck as the two embrace, the flames burning around them are nothing compared to the flame burning between them.

“You know…I think I finally understand the meaning of this song now, do you?” Julie asks as her head is rested on John’s chest. After a small pause, John simply smiles and says “…don’t you think we oughta know by now?”

Julie lifts her head up as John looks down into her piercing blue eyes one last time. Those were the eyes he had fallen in love with all those years ago. The two kiss passionately as the fire consumes the dancefloor, their hearts and bodies becoming one inside the flames.

He was the one she always dreamed of…she was the one he tried to draw. Rather than having to go through the pain of ending a doomed relationship, they rekindled their love at the cost of their lives. They met their end slow dancing in a burning room.

Irrational Fear

Derrick looked on as the beast staggered towards him with blood red eyes. This was the beast that was blocking Derrick’s journey into the vast, beautiful World of the Unknown. Normally afraid, today was different as he felt a strange sense of courage normally foreign to him. He needed to get past the beast and into the World of the Unknown at all cost. In that moment he knew, it was now or never. The beast or him. Brandishing his trusty dagger, Derrick ran at the beast full force with nothing held back.

The beast let out a roar and charged at Derrick with what looked like smoke puffing out of its nostrils. The two were nearly face to face when the beast suddenly stopped in its tracks as a look of fear flashed across its face. The beast quickly spun around and ran the other way as fast as it could.

Dismayed, Derrick skidded to a halt, looking on in disbelief as the beast scampered the opposite direction.

“What’s wrong, I thought you wanted a fight?” Derrick yelled as the beast ran the other way. Upon hearing this, the beast quickly stopped several yards away from Derrick and swung its long, scaly neck around to face him.

“A fight? Against you?” the beast scoffed, “I wouldn’t stand a chance against you!”

Derrick couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The beast was several feet taller than he was, had sharp claws, tough, scaly skin and teeth that looked ten times sharper than his dagger. A creature like that shouldn’t fear anything. Derrick began to wonder if the beast was merely taunting him.

“I get it…you’re just playing with me, aren’t you? Do you really think I’m that stupid? Look at you! Your sharp claws and teeth, your tough skin and large frame! I know I’m probably going to lose to you, but I’d rather die in battle than lie down and let you have me without a fight!” Derrick shouted as he pointed his dagger at the beast.

“You really don’t get it, do you?” the beast sighed, “You’ve already beaten me.”

“What?” Derrick shouted.

“Look closer.”

Derrick squinted his eyes to get a better glimpse of the beast standing a few yards in front of him. Strangely enough, the beast’s previously large frame was suddenly a lot smaller than it was before, what was once a towering creature now looked more like a small house cat. Its skin was now more akin to soft, delicate fabric than the tough, impenetrable armor originally covering the beast before. Even its sharp claws and teeth were now much less intimidating and almost laughable. This was not the beast he had been terrified of his entire life.

“But…but I don’t understand,” Derrick said, confused, “Just a minute ago you were twice my size and had sharp teeth but now…now you’re nothing.”

“You see me for what I truly am, Derrick,” the beast said, “I am nothing. You spent your entire life avoiding me, worrying about me, changing yourself because of me, losing sleep because of me, not doing what you love because of me, hating yourself and others because of me…now do you see how ridiculous and irrational your fears were? Why have you made me out to be this terrible monster?”

Derrick, still in shock over this daunting revelation, sunk to his knees as he tried to process everything that the beast was telling him. Could it be that his fears were the whole time irrational? Was this beast really just…nothing? Had his imagination made this creature into something much more diabolical than it really was?

“This whole time…I was so afraid to face you and explore the World of the Unknown because I didn’t think I could defeat you. I had to hide myself from you…and yet, you were nothing more than a tiny, weak and pathetic creature that I could have crushed without any problem…” Derrick said as his anger increased with each word spoken.

“You’re correct, Derrick,” the beast said.

Derrick picked himself up off the ground, ran toward the beast and placed his dagger at the beast’s throat.

“Before I do this, tell me…what are you?” Derrick asked the beast as it lie helplessly under Derrick’s blade.

The beast looked up at Derrick as its body began to wither.

“I’m the Boogeyman when you were five, I’m the witch who almost boiled you alive in that dream you had when you were nine, I’m the shame you felt after that kid threw your lunchbox into the bushes when you were eleven, I’m the worthlessness you felt after your boss yelled at you when you were eighteen, I’m the business you were too scared to even start when you were twenty-two because you didn’t want to fail. Call me whatever you want, but ultimately we both know what I really am.”

“…you’re nothing.” Derrick said under his breath.

“The only one that kept you from exploring the World of the Unknown for all these years was you, not me,” the beast said as it drew its final gasp of air.

Derrick slashed the beast’s throat with his dagger but quickly realized the beast no longer had any substance. In fact, Derrick began to wonder if the beast ever had any substance to begin with! The beast’s body continued to wither as Derrick lifted his eyes to see a vast, beautiful landscape in front of him that he had never seen before.

Derrick laid his dagger down at the spot where the beast had died. He no longer needed to fight, he knew he had won. Running full speed ahead, Derrick’s mind was now free to explore, create and innovate without fear that the beast of his past would rear its ugly head again.

And even if it did show up, he reasoned, he knew exactly what the beast was:

It was nothing.

And nothing would ever keep him from his destiny again.

Brand New Star Wars Trailer Released in Korea

This week, Lucasfilm released a new trailer for the upcoming Star Wars film that has fans talking. The trailer included a brief appearance of the new villainous group known as The First Order that will be the main antagonist in the film.

A lot of the footage is stuff we’ve already seen, but it opens in a snowy landscape with several thousand storm troopers and officers grouped before a stage waiting for their orders. Friggin awesome if you ask me!

Sort of reminiscent of Nazi Germany, these endlessly numbered storm troopers are sure to pose a threat to the heroes of the film.

Check out the trailer above and let me know what you think of it below!

5 Strongest Signs Of Aliens & Alien Life

I remember as a kid driving with my dad down a gravel road in the country on a road trip we took to Branson, MO. The night was pretty typical with nothing too out-of-the-ordinary happening, I remember we were talking about the softball game that I was going to play the next night and how focused I needed to be. Suddenly, we both looked up and saw a big, bright yellow football-shaped object in the sky with what appeared to be exhaust coming out of the back end of it. The object danced about for a couple of seconds and then suddenly vanished along with the exhaust. My dad and I looked at each other and exchanged looks that said, “Did you see that?”

I’ll never forget that day…it made me wonder what sorts of things are out there that we just haven’t found out about yet. Did I see an alien ship? Was it a government controlled aircraft? Did I imagine it? These questions still race through my mind to this day whenever I think about that day.

Martin Freeman Cast In Captain America: Civil War

Martin Freeman
Last month it was announced that Martin Freeman, most famous for playing Dr. John Watson in the British crime drama Sherlock TV series and Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit film franchise, was cast to play a part in the upcoming Marvel film Captain America: Civil War.

Exactly what his role will be in the film has yet to be announced, which has caused much speculation in the online world as to who he might be cast as. One common idea is that he will play the government interrogator Everret K. Ross who interrogates superheros to see if they are a threat or not. Fans believe that Freeman will reprise this role in the upcoming film Marvel film Black Panther which will further explore the relationship between Ross and Black Panther (more on this here).

My Thoughts

I love Martin Freeman as an actor. From his role as Tim in the UK version of The Office to his role as John Watson in Sherlock and, of course, as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, Freeman shows his versatility as an actor by nailing multiple roles that are all completely different. For that reason, I’m super excited to see what Freeman will bring to the table in this new Marvel film. While I have my own ideas of who Freeman will play, regardless of who it will be I am thrilled to learn he’ll be making an appearance as a (possibly) recurring character in the Marvel film series. The film is set to be released next year, so only time will tell before we finally find out who Martin Freeman will be playing in Captain America: Civil War.

Captain America: Civil War Logo Revealed!

Captain America: Civil War Logo Revealed

Jeremy Renner recently post on his Instagram page a photo that apparently reveals the logo for the upcoming film Captain America: Civil War. The photo had fans of the Marvel series overjoyed and heightened their enthusiasm as they wait anxiously for the next film to be released.

The much hyped third installment of the Captain America film series will be coming out May 6th, 2016 and will star an ensemble cast featuring  Chris EvansScarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr.Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, and Paul Rudd. The film will take place after the events of Avengers 2: Age of Ultron and, according to Wikipedia, will have “politicians look to form a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to call in the Avengers…”

My Thoughts

I am a huge fan of the Marvel films, particularly the Iron Man films, so I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this film. The film will star the new formation of the Avengers, War Machine taking the place of Iron Man, Vision taking the place of Thor, Falcon taking the place of Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch taking the place of the Hulk. I find this roster compelling as it’s still got the mix of “normals” and “otherworldlies” but is still very different from the original roster. I’m personally excited to see Vision in action more as he’s a really cool character in my opinion.

What Are Your Thoughts?

What do you think of the new logo? Also, what do you think of the new roster of the Avengers? Will it be better than the first? Write your thoughts below!

Will Jared Leto’s Joker Suck? I Don’t Think So.

jaredletoWe first saw previews of Jared Leto’s version of the Joker for the new DC comics film Suicide Squad last April and all I have to say is wow! Judging from the photos released this version of the Joker looks really menacing! Though to many fans Leto’s Joker looks promising, some fans are up in arms over the Joker’s “punk” appearance and all his tattoos. The question is, will this version of the Joker hold up to the previous versions of the character played by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger? I think it will, though I do think that it’ll be tough shoes to fill given how impressive Ledger’s version of the Joker was in the 2008 film The Dark Knight.

Jared Leto has had success as an actor with roles like the heroin-addicted Harry Goldfarb from Requiem For a Dream and John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman, in Chapter 27. Leto is probably best known, though, as the lead singer of the rock band 30 Seconds to Mars.

Though Leto does not have quite the acting background as, say, Heath Ledger did, Leto’s performances as a serious actor do make his casting as the Joker look promising. Leto showed dedication to his role as Mark David Chapman by putting on weight to look like him and studying his movements, similar to how Ledger prepared for his role as the Joker by locking himself in a hotel room and coming up with how the character would act.

What Do You Think?

Will Jared Leto’s performance as the Joker overshadow Ledger’s performance or will it suck? Write your thoughts below!

Ant-Man: Paul Rudd as a Superhero?

Ant-ManWhen I went to see the new Avengers movie, I remember wondering what upcoming films I’d see during the previews. Honestly, seeing the upcoming film previews beforehand is one of my favorite parts of going to the movie theater.

Pretty soon after taking a sip from my dixie water cup (they barely give you any water at the movie theaters…it’s like they MAKE you buy a drink or bottled water otherwise you’re left with next to nothing in your cup) I looked up at the screen to see one of my favorite actors: Paul Rudd! I thought to myself, “What is Paul Rudd doing in a Marvel movie?

Then he donned the Ant-Man suit.

And I thought nooo…are you serious? Paul Rudd’s gonna be a superhero! Awesome!

Needless to say I was ecstatic.

My Thoughts

I’m always curious as to what new superheroes Marvel will add to the roster for the Avengers films, and I’m definitely pleased to see Ant-Man in action! The trailer looks incredible, and I’m actually looking forward to seeing Paul Rudd play as a superhero.

Paul Rudd has always been one of my favorite comedic actors. From the Anchorman films to I Love You, Man, his delivery and ability to improvise makes him a brilliant comedian. I personally think actors who are naturally funny and have starred in comedies end up making great superhero movies.

Although this isn’t always the case, there have been some great examples such as Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool in X-Men Origins and, of course, the naturally funny Robert Downey Jr. donning the Iron Man suit for the Ironman films.

What Are Your Thoughts?

Are you looking forward to the new Ant-Man film? Do you think Paul Rudd will nail the role or will it end up being a flop? Write your thoughts below!

Avengers: Age of Ultron Is AMAZING!

If you still haven’t seen Avengers: Age of Ultron I suggest you crawl out from the rock you’ve been living under and get your butt to the theaters! This movie is amazing!

What I Loved About the Film

Robert Downey Jr. is the man, and I love his characterization of Tony Stark in the Marvel films. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, you really get to see the hilarity of Stark in action. From the opening scene where he makes fun of Captain America for asking him to “watch his language” to his “I’m sorry” while fighting the Hulk, Iron Man truly shines in this film.

Another one of my favorites from the film is Quicksilver. Played by newcomer Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Quicksilver has the ability to run really, really fast. He also has a pretty awesome Russian accent in the film, which I loved. Unfortunately, Quicksilver’s screen time was cut short as he was killed after saving Hawkeye and a small child towards the end of the film. It’s possible that Johnson was only signed on for one film, which is why they had to kill him off. Who knows, though? Maybe he will return due to popular demand?

Ultron was pretty awesome too. Voiced by James Spader, the character had somewhat of a weird personality. A bit comical at times, and yet very serious in his demeanor. To me, he seemed a bit unstable as he was exposed to so much chaos that humanity has brought over the years, which is why he felt driven to “purge the planet”. The problem, of course, was that he focused entirely on the negative aspects of humanity while disregarding all the good that humanity has done. So the real question is, are we humans truly the problem or are we the solution to suffering? This struggle is best represented by the conversation towards the end of the film between he and Vision, who brings balance to the equation by focusing more on the good of humanity rather than the evil.

What Are Your Thoughts?

Do you think this second installment of Avengers was better than the first? Do you agree more with Ultron or with Vision? Write your thoughts below!
